It’s January 2012! A beginning of a new year; an opportunity to start fresh. With the spirit of renewing and the energy of creating we are ready to take charge and manage our lives. The step of the month, the first step, reminds us that what we had called “controlling our lives” was actually our attempt to control the uncontrollable. The “Serenity Prayer” reminds us that we are asking to know the difference between the serenity to accept and the courage to change. Now we can take our strength and direct it beyond ourselves, by carrying the message to organizations such as recovery centers, schools , drug courts etc., offering them our desire to share our message of hope, in order to attract those in need of help.

Do you remember what life was like before Al-Anon/Alateen? The anger, confusion, fear, feeling of being lost? The guilt and anxiety? For many of us, those things have been replaced by serenity, courage and hope. We have a sense of direction. But how many other people still haven’t found this wonderful program? And how will they ever find out if we don’t share the message?

Oakland County Al-Anon/Alateen Public Outreach Committee is doing just that. But it’s not just a job for a select few: It’s something we can all do. This is our chance to give back. And no matter who we are, there is something everyone can do. If you have some extra time, why not volunteer to work with the Committee? Our work is uplifting and enjoyable, and most importantly, effective.

Do you attend a church, temple, mosque or other place of worship? Have you given a copy of the “Open Letter to Spiritual Leaders” to the person or persons who operate your house of worship? You can download the letter from the Oakland County AFG website (oaklandafg.org). Whether you deliver it in person, email it, snail-mail it, or slip it under the office door, you will be providing your spiritual leader with an invaluable resource to help others who are searching for hope and serenity.  And while you’re at it, why not ask if Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature (CAL) can be placed in your church, temple, mosque, etc., as a resource for members and visitors. Many houses of worship have literature racks or community bulletin boards. Free and low-cost literature is available from our office in Waterford. You can also speak to your Group Representative about getting literature, bookmarks, and meeting lists.

Does your place of worship have a bulletin or newsletter? Why not ask if they will put in a line or two about Al-Anon? For an electronic copy of a short ad, email outreach@oaklandafg.org.

There are dozens of ways to share the message… in the schools, in the courts, in treatment facilities, and in our daily lives. For more ideas on how to help, call Public Outreach at: 248-706-1020, or email us at the address above. This season, with all the rushing around to find the perfect gift, let’s not forget the gift of hope. It may be the least expensive gift you give this year, but without question, it will be the most valuable and enduring.
